Entry# 9 Topics in Food Quest

I came across a documentary that connected with the theme we've been exploring in class. "How Ultra-Processed Food is Slowly Killing Us".I was not expecting to sit through the whole thing, but honestly it pulled me in. It breaks down how much processed food has taken over our diets and how companies keep pushing these foods on us becuase it is easier to sell, despite it being bad for our health. I found the documentary to be very similar to films like 'Fresh" and 'Food Inc' reminding me how broken our food system really is. What stood out to me the most was how many people don't realize how processed the food they are eating is. I reflected to things I eat myself just becuase of their convience and cheap price and realized how many others do the same. If people really looked into what's going into their bodies then they would see how dangerous the products are.
The video even talked about how these products are designed to be addictive, which reminded me of an article made where they compared processed foods to be like tobacco; dangerous and addictive and that really clicked for me while watching this. I chose this video becuase it ties well into the topics we been working on and even shows that the issue is beyond personal choices. The system is built on profit, so making unhealthy food more desirable than fruits and vegetables is what keeps these companies in business. Watching this deepened the need to think more about my own habits and realize the issue is not only due to people's choices but the system that has been built around us. Everything is strategically placed, and is rarely made to benefit the consumer. If we start becoming more socially and enviromentally conscious of the issues around us, then I do believe tackling this issue is possible in the future.
